Music

Karen Gomm

I am originally from London and moved to Wales in 1975. I come from an extremely musical family. We all played instruments from an early age and sang in various choirs and choral societies.

I have been married to my husband Ian since 1971 and he is a singer song writer/ professional musician and piano tuner.

I play the saxophone and sing/ improvise with 'The Open Score Band' which is based in Welshpool.

The aims of my work are based on Experimental workshops which explore rhythms and the feelings that music can create in the body.

Enjoyment of the music-making is paramount.

My aim is to include everyone, especially the non-musician who wants to play in a group situation. Through games and sharing our time together, we explore pitch, rhythm, dynamics, structure, timbre, graphic score etc. by using mainly percussion instruments and boom whackers (plastic tubes which are tuned to different musical notes).

The sessions are informal flexible and participant led. I have gained experience working with young children and adults who have learning differences.

I am only available in the evenings, at weekends and the school holidays as I work full-time at Berriew Primary School.
