We co-ordinate and fund numerous one off arts projects as a result of community requests. Recent projects have included workshops for "Curiad" a teenage choir in Machynlleth, traditional Welsh music and dance workshops in Welshpool, environmental art workshops for the International Sculpture Symposium at Lake Vyrnwy, a mural for Llwyn Teg residential home in Llanfyllin and general arts workshops for North Powys Communities. We also manage projects for other organisations.
This year we facilitated singing workshops with children from Oldford School and community members. The results were recorded and made into a CD which was sold to raise money for the special care baby unit in Shrewsbury Hospital.
This year we instigated a pilot heritage project linked to the former Llanfyllin Union Workhouse Y Dolydd. Two artists worked with local primary schools to create work based on the lives of people who endured the workhouse system. Llanfechain school pupils each made boxes representing a day at the workhouse. Each box contained a piece of creative writing, observational drawings and made / found objects. All the boxes were then arranged into a cruciform shape with four ’courtyards’, loosely following the plan of Y Dolydd.
Pupils from Llanfyllin school created silk banners based on their views of the past, present and future of Y Dolydd.
The work created by the schools was exhibited and much admired at this years Workhouse Festival. We hope to develop our heritage projects further.
Partnership Projects with Powys CC Lifelong Learning Development Officer
A number of tutored and untutored sessions with a model have taken place this year and proven to be very popular. There is now an established group of life drawers who would like untutored sessions and from now on these will be self financing. We will continue to offer tutored sessions for beginners in partnership with Powys CC.
We have supported Powys Youth Service on a number of projects this year:
Having secured funding for a continuation of last year’s project, we worked with a Llanfair Caereinion based group, weekly for two terms through the mediums of mask, instrumental music and digital music. We managed this project for Powys Youth Service. Arts For Youth is one of a number of projects for young people running throughout Powys as part of Powys CC’s Chance Programme funded by the Big Lottery fund. Next year we will be managing an arts for youth project for Complementary Education Services in Newtown.
A day of environmental arts activity for visiting schools took place at Gregynog Festival in June.
Two days of circus skills workshops took place for both age groups attending Llanfyllin Summer Playscheme.
